I have a Toshiba Satellite brand laptop and, when I have it running on it's battery power, I only get a minute or so before it automatically goes into standby mode when it runs out of power. How do I get more power out of my laptop battery?

I have tried changing the power settings for it. When I first unplug the power cord when it is fully charged, it will say I have over an hour of battery life left, but within a minute or so, it will tell me i have 3 minutes or less left on the battery.
The battery is dead; it is no longer capable of holding much of a charge, and it will need to be replaced. Replacement batteries are fairly easy to find, but sometimes expensive.
